Step 1
Meet the teacher personally. While all instructors do things differently, The person who is to be working with your little one should be a warm and friendly person. Ask what his or her preference is on parents observing class. Opinions between teachers differ in this matter. I prefer the parents stay to watch, in case the child needs them, and just because I know it gives parents peace of mind. Some teachers prefer the children not become distracted by the parents' presence, which can be disruptive to the class.
Step2
Most pre-school classes are 30-45 minutes in length and meet once per week. I've had parents ask me for a longer or more frequent class, but really, this is about all the little ones can handle before they stop enjoying the class and asking to go home. We want it to be something the children enjoy and look forward to, so we keep it short and sweet.
Step3
You will also find that most pre-school dance classes repeat the same exercises each week, perhaps slowly introducing new things throughout the year, but keeping a predictable schedule through the class. It is important at this age and with the technique of dance, to learn by repetition.
Step4
Pre-School dance class, or "Creative Movement", as it is often called, is not going to teach your four-year-old how to dance en pointe or to be able to do her splits all the way to the floor. It certainly may lead to this in the future, but dance takes many years of study before it is something one can be proficient in. The point of a Creative Movement class is to A) Introduce the child to basic dance steps B) Teach the child about standing in line, waiting for his or her turn, etc. C) Enhance creativity. D) Begin to work on balance, grace, and flexibility. E) Have fun! If you bring your child to his or her dance class with these expectations, you can expect to have a wonderful year and hopefully many more to come!
